God’s promises never fail. We can trust Him. This blog is about the seventh principle, Promise, in my book The Posture Principle: A practical guide to embracing your true calling. I used a section of our spine to illustrate that good ‘vertebrae’ (principles) create a strong spiritual backbone. You can catch up with the first six of this book in the previous blogs; they are short prompts for reflection and strengthening. As usual, I will share one quote, and answer three questions.
‘The truth is that Jesus has given us a promise that He is going to finish the work He has begun in us.’ Martina Davis, The Posture Principle.
Why have you chosen ‘Promise’ as one of the principles? We need God’s rock-solid promises as part of our spiritual backbone if it is not to be cracked or broken at every push and shove of life. Most of us have experienced at least one of the ‘promises’ of the world, and know they can be flakey at best, dangerously wobbly, and inconsistent! Some have found that trusting again is hard, which further erodes our spirituality, making it hard to have faith in God.
What do I have to do to find faith again? The most important thing we can do is to ask the Holy Spirit to help us let go of our defences, so that we can take hold of the faith that He will put into our hearts. Ask Him to show you Jesus, and ask Jesus to be your Lord. He works beyond our understanding, and He can change our hearts. Just try it and see. That is one of His promises: ‘Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.’ Jeremiah 24:7 (NKJV).
Where can I find God’s promises for myself? Spend time reading the Bible and you will find so many promises all through it! Look up ‘promise’ in the concordance at the back of the Bible if it has one. This is why a physical copy is very helpful, where you can see lists under specific words. This isn’t an exhaustive list (unless you get yourself an actual concordance to go with your Bible), but it will help you. If you have a Bible in which Jesus’ words are red, you can search them and see what you find! And the epistles – the letters – are a great place to look. Here is just one from The Passion Translation Bible version: ‘He will keep you steady and strong to the very end, making your character mature so that you will be found innocent on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is forever faithful and can be trusted to do this in you, for He has invited you to co-share the life of His Son, Jesus, the Anointed One, our King!’ 1 Corinthians 1:8,9 (TPT).
He will never stop loving us. Trust Him. Martina.
