Seven Strategies: No.4 – Rhythm

Is there a flow to your day? I’ve been sharing seven simple strategies. Today, we will consider how rhythm undergirds and enables boundaries, decisions and beliefs in order to live a fulfilling and productive life. These first three strategies were the subject of my last three blogs.

Rhythm is built into nature: seasons, sunrise, sunset, and tides bring a kind of dance to the natural world. There are spiritual seasons too – times of productivity and growth, times of waiting and letting go. It does not surprise me that God prompts me to develop rhythm to my days, weeks, months, years and life seasons.

The Freedom Strategy, Martina Davis

Why do I need a rhythmic framework? I know it may sound strange, but living free and finding fulfilment needs structure. Consider a river flowing toward the sea. However joyfully it leaps over the rocks and sparkles with life, it flows best with riverbanks. The same goes for us: out of a rhythmic framework, we produce better and live more freely because we know our flow. Life becomes fruitful. We feel more rooted, secure and clear with a consistent rhythm to our everyday lives.

I’m too busy to set a rhythm! Nehemiah in the Bible needed to rebuild the walls of his hometown. At the same time, he was fighting off insults and attack, whilst organising time schedules and work for the different families of the town. He was busy! Yet he had a rhythm born out of purpose and knowing who he was and what he was called to do. He took time at the very start, valuable time, to take a careful look at the project. Then he set the rhythm of the project, tweaking it as he went, according to the circumstances. He and the people built the wall in just fifty-two days.

What are examples of rhythms I can set? Are you self-employed, creative, or working from home? Decide on the elements of each day that are priorities. Then create the riverbanks – the boundaries – for instance times you will pray, exercise, eat, rest, stop, answer emails, phone, text, be with family and friends. Set times to start and finish. Allow these boundaries to be the banks that enable your river of productivity to flow energetically, refreshingly and in the right direction. Let those decisions influence your in-the-moment choices. Gradually you will find they become gentle rhythms that keep you going. Is there a negative habit you can replace with a good rhythm? For instance, if you tend to scroll social media or answer texts all day, allowing this negative habit to interfere with productivity and even with your rest or family, then learn to intentionally turn off notifications. Also switch your phone to silent, and use the facility on phones and laptops to choose a ‘Do not disturb’ mode. As this becomes part of your regular rhythm, you set yourself and others healthy boundaries. You might need to write yourself a daily note and set times at first! You will be amazed at the amount of time freed up and how much more relaxed and focussed you are.

As I’ve said before, remember – we are all in this together. It isn’t a question of perfection. It is one of looking for the light and living in it, and then enjoying the journey. Blessings on your way!
